Chapter 15: The Door We Closed
The twelve chairs came inside because the rain began blowing sideways across the porch.
"They're borrowed," Tate said, already lifting four. "They can't get wet."
"You said you'd carry nothing tonight," I reminded him.
"They aren't mine, so it doesn't count."
"It counts when you keep adding them," I said.
He stopped in the doorway with a chair on each arm and thought about it.
"That's a good line," he admitted, and kept walking.
He set the first four down in the hall between the kitchen and the bedrooms.
I carried four more, since I had written all twelve into the plan myself.
The last four went on top, and the stack stood as high as my shoulder.
It also filled the whole hall, which was narrow and had been designed by someone who never lent furniture.
"We can climb past," Tate said.
He went first, one hand holding the tower steady, and I followed sideways.
