Chapter 16: An Old Promise Ends

Tate's POV

I woke with my wife's elbow in my ribs and fourteen messages waiting on the machine.

My hat still hung on the outside knob, and the brim was straight.

I stepped over the fallen chairs in the hall to reach it.

Cardboard Joelle faced the wall, so I turned her around and apologized.

The message light had been blinking since the night before.

I pressed the button and stood in my socks to listen.

The first message from Hallie asked politely about the gate latch.

The seventh said she was holding the gate shut with the same stone.

The fourteenth said she was worried, and asked whether I was ignoring her.

I was, and it was the first time I had done it on purpose.

The latch and the screws still sat in their gift bag by the toaster.

I put them in my jacket pocket and wrote Becca a note.

It said Back soon, and I crossed out soon.

I wrote: Back by breakfast.

I drove to Hallie's with the windows down so I wouldn't turn around.
