Chapter 24: The Gate Can Wait
The pie-tin man stood at his first gate on Monday morning holding a screwdriver and an expectant smile.
Tate reined in beside him and pulled a clean pie tin from his saddlebag.
"I washed this," he said, and handed it down.
"Thank you," the man said. "The latch sticks. It's four minutes of work, and you're right here."
I looked at the latch, which was crooked, rusted, and entirely fixable.
Tate looked at it too, and I saw his hands tighten on the reins.
"I'm sure it is," he said. "Not today."
"I'll pay you in pie," the man said.
"I like your pie," Tate said. "Not today."
"Two pies," the man said.
I almost laughed, because he had raised the price without being asked.
"I'm good with a screwdriver," I heard myself say. "I could do it while you hold the horses."
"Becca," Tate said.
"I didn't say it," I said. "I'm taking it back."
"Thank you."
"It's the first bad bargain I've left alone this week."
