Chapter 23: The Clinic Door

Joanna met me at the elevator on the fourth floor with her arms folded.

"She's by the vending machines," she said. "Same coat. She hasn't eaten. I've offered her a sandwich twice."

"You offered Brynn a sandwich?"

"I'm a nurse. It's a reflex. I resent it."

The hallway outside the OB clinic was long and bright, with a row of blue chairs along one wall.

A security guard stood at the end with his arms folded.

It was the same guard who had watched Tobias with the roses.

He caught my eye and shook his head slowly, which meant he'd tried.

Brynn stood up from the last chair when she saw me.

She was in the camel coat from the dock, and it was wrinkled.

Her hair was flat and unwashed, and her face was bare and grey.

She held her phone in both hands.

"Sam."

"Joanna says you've been here since five."

"I didn't know where else to go." Her voice was a thread. "I lost the apartment on Tuesday. The lease was in the pharmacy's name, can you believe that? My mother won't pick up. My sister said she'd call and she hasn't."

"I'm sorry for that."

"The state board is meeting in November. I'm going to lose my license, they said, maybe not forever." She tried to laugh. "I don't have anywhere to sleep, Sam. I slept in my car."

I looked at her.

I looked for the girl who had shared a dorm room with me, and the woman who had held my hand at two funerals.
