Chapter 4: What He Told His Mother

Dorothy Colburn sat at my kitchen table with her handbag in her lap and her coat still on.

She had let herself in with the key I gave her at our housewarming.

"Close the door, Althea," she said. "I don't want the neighbors to hear this."

I closed the door and put my keys in the bowl.

"Travis texted me from the airport," she said. "He says you made a spectacle of him in front of a hundred strangers."

"He gave Shelby my seat on our anniversary trip," I said. "I paid for it."

"He told me that too."

Her mouth went thin.

"Shelby is a sweet girl who has stood by this family for years. She had a hard year. A wife who loved her husband would have been glad to share."

"Share a trip for two," I said. "With my husband."

"Don't be crude."

I sat down across from her, because my knees wanted me to.

In my purse, the clinic envelope pressed against my hip.

I thought, not yet.

"Dorothy, he put the word Honeymoon in the booking," I said. "It was in there for ten weeks."

She blinked, one slow blink, and then shook it off.

"Travis can be careless with words. He has had a very hard time."

"Hard for who?"

"For a man who wants a family and doesn't have one."

There it was.

She leaned forward, and her pearl earrings swung.

"Althea, I have kept quiet for two years. I have sat at that table every Sunday and watched you push a roll around your plate and look at the floor when I mention a baby. I know what the clinic told Travis."
