Chapter 8: My Name Is Astrid
"My name is Astrid," I said, before the door had finished closing.
The lamp had gone out behind me, and the black in the room was complete.
I stood where I was, with my coat still on and my heart going hard.
He did not move.
I heard him breathe in once, and let it out slowly.
"Tonight there is no contract," I said. "No window. No doctor with a calendar. Nobody is paying anyone, and you're not trying to make anything."
"I know," he said. "That's what I told her to tell you."
"So I'm telling you who I am."
The quiet went on for so long that I thought I had made a mistake.
Then he crossed the cabin, and I felt him stop in front of me, close enough that my coat brushed his.
"Astrid," he said.
He said it low, and he said it once.
It was the most naked thing anyone had ever done to me, and he was still fully dressed.
My knees went weak.
"Say it again," I said.
"Not yet," he said.
"Why not?"
"Because I'd say it all night."
I reached out in the dark and found the front of his shirt and pulled him down to me.
The kiss was nothing like the first one.
There was no hurry in it and no rule.
He tasted of mint and rain, and he kissed me slowly, with his hands cupping my face, and when I opened my mouth he groaned.
He pushed the coat off my shoulders, and it dropped.
He unbuttoned my blouse one button at a time, and he kissed every inch of skin he uncovered.
My collarbone.
My shoulder.
The soft place inside my elbow.
By the time he got the blouse off me I was shaking, and I was not cold.
"Let me do you," I said.
He stood still while I undressed him.
I pulled his shirt up over his head and put my mouth to his chest and felt his heart thudding against my lips.
