Chapter 10: The Ninth Night
We dragged the mattress off the broken bed and onto the rug in front of the stove.
It was the ninth night, and I wanted it to take all night.
I lit every candle in the cabin.
There were eleven.
Axel stood in the middle of the room with the firelight on his bare chest and watched me do it.
"What?" I said.
"You're lighting candles," he said.
"It's the last night."
"It doesn't have to be," he said.
"Axel."
"I know. I know," he said.
I went to him and put my hands flat on his chest.
His heart was going hard under my palm.
"Tonight I want it slow," I said. "I want it so slow that I can feel the whole night go by."
"Slow I can do," he said.
"Lie down."
"Talya," he said.
"On your back. I'll show you what I mean."
He lay down.
But this time I did not climb on top.
I lay on my own back beside him on the mattress, and I took his hand and put it on my hip.
"You," I said. "Over me."
He understood.
He rolled up on one elbow, and then over me, and braced his weight on his forearms on either side of my head.
He was huge above me.
The firelight went around him and gilded his shoulders and left his face in shadow, and I saw only his eyes.
"There you are," I said.
"Here I am."
I put my arms around his neck.
He kissed me, deeply, taking his time, and his hair fell forward against my forehead.
He kissed my jaw, then my throat, then the notch between my collarbones.
His mouth went down to my breasts and stayed there for a long while.
He licked each nipple in slow wet circles until my back left the mattress and I was making noises I had not made before.
