Chapter 11: Noon
Axel's POV
The trucks did not move.
I stood at the window with the kettle in my hand and counted engines.
Four trucks, idling, with the exhaust standing straight up in the cold.
Six wolves, maybe seven, and a man in the lead truck with sandy hair who never once got out.
Knut Halvorsen could wait.
The truce held until noon, and he was a man who had never in his life broken a rule that was written down.
It was seven in the morning.
I had five hours.
"Is that Knut?" Talya said behind me.
"In the first truck."
"He's early," she said.
"He wants you to see him waiting."
She came up beside me in the quilt and looked at the line of trucks.
She did not flinch.
Her hair was a dark tangle down her back, and there was a mark on her neck where my mouth had been.
"I've decided what to do," she said.
"Tell me," I said.
"I walk out at noon. I say no to his face. I say it in front of his wolves."
"He's counting on you alone."
"I know," she said.
"Talya, before noon, I need to tell you."
She put her fingers over my mouth.
