Chapter 22: The High Chair
The pack went home at last, in trucks, in the dark, and the Cache House emptied around us.
Larisa went with the Aunt.
Knut went with two men and no coat.
The old women of the Kitchen banked the fire.
One by one they touched my shoulder as they passed, and the last one shut the great door behind her.
Then it was only the fire, and the spruce chair, and Axel.
He stood at the foot of the hearth with his hands at his sides, watching me.
I had not moved from the chair.
My grandmother's cord lay against my collarbone.
The light came up the log walls in long red tongues, and it caught on his beard and his eyes.
"You said something to me," I said. "In front of two hundred people."
"I did."
"Say it again."
"I'm going to put you in that chair," he said, "and kneel in front of it."
"Then do it."
He crossed the floor.
He knelt in front of me on the bare boards, and the whole huge length of him bowed.
I looked at the top of his head and felt something unfamiliar, hot and certain and enormous.
It was power.
It was mine, and it was given, and I liked it more than I could say.
I put my hand in his hair.
"Take off my boots."
He took off my boots.
He did it slowly, one and then the other, and kissed each instep.
"My tights."
"You tore them," he said.
"Then take off what's left."
He peeled the ruined wool down my legs.
He folded the wreck of it and laid it on the floor beside him, with great care, and I almost laughed.
I sat in my skirt and my sweater, in my grandmother's chair.
The Nose cord lay on my neck, and my bare feet rested on his thighs.
"Lift your skirt," he said, hoarse.
