Chapter 24: First King
The sun was out on the beach the next day, warm on my bare back, and Axel's mouth was moving down my spine.
He had spread the old quilt on the sand behind a bleached driftwood log, where the bluff cut off the wind.
Cook Inlet lay in front of us, blue and bright.
Across it the white cone of Iliamna stood against a sky with no cloud in it.
Gulls went over.
The river ran out beside us into the sea, brown and quick with snowmelt, and somewhere upstream the set-nets were full.
I had come down to the water to look for the first king.
I had stayed because he had put his hand on my hip.
"Axel," I said into the quilt.
"Mm."
"Anyone could walk down here."
"Nobody will," he said.
"You don't know that."
"I asked the Kitchen," he said against the small of my back. "I asked the Aunt. She said the beach is ours until noon."
I laughed into my arms.
"You asked the Kitchen for permission to fuck me on the beach?"
"I asked for a cove," he said. "I'm not a barbarian."
His hands were on my hips.
They were huge and warm and rough from the saw, and they covered the whole span from bone to bone.
I was on my hands and knees on the quilt with the sun on my shoulders.
I was naked, and I was not cold at all.
He kissed the dimples at the base of my back, one and then the other.
Then he kissed lower, and I felt his beard scrape the curve of my ass, and I shivered.
"Slow," I said. "I want it slow. I want to feel the whole morning go by."
"You said that once before."
"And you didn't believe me."
"I believed you," he said. "I just wanted to hear you say it again."
He put his mouth on me.
