Chapter 14: Subject

Rhett's POV

I sat on the end of my bed for an hour after she left, with the rail door open and no one on the other side of it.

Then I called the care home, because it was Thursday and the numbers didn't care what I had done.

"Prendergast," said the woman from the care home, in the tired voice she used for me. "The transfer to the memory wing closes tomorrow at five. If the second deposit isn't in, they give the bed to the next family."

"It'll be in."

"Mr. Prendergast, I've heard that before."

"Is he eating?"

She was quiet for a second.

"He asked for you at lunch," she said. "He called me by your mother's name. But he asked."

I thanked her and hung up and looked at my hands.

Camille's call had come with a big number, and the job was one I had done nine times.

A lonely wife. A hungry man. A set of photographs.

I had never once thought about the woman's face afterward.

Then a woman in a green dress sat on the stool I had told her was the good one, and I set my napkin boat in front of her.

I had the camera in my bag and my hand on the strap.

She laughed at the boat, a real laugh, surprised out of her.

I let go of the strap.

That was night one.

Since then I had sent Tripp nothing.
