Chapter 6: Hot Stones
Camille knocked on my door at nine the next morning with two coffees and a paper bag.
"Peace offering," she said. "Honey in yours."
I let her in.
She sat on the end of the white bed in her linen shorts and took a croissant out of the bag.
"Tripp is on a call with the lawyers until noon," she said. "So I've booked us at the spa. Hot stones, the full thing. It's on the company, don't argue."
"I'll pay for mine."
"Rochelle."
"I'm serious."
She looked at me for a moment with her head tilted.
"You've changed since the airport," she said.
"I've had enough sleep."
"Have you?" She smiled. "I heard the storm. I went down to the beach and got some good weather shots for the newsletter. The investors love a storm."
"I saw you from my balcony."
"Did you? I hope I didn't look silly."
She said it so easily that I felt foolish for having wondered.
The spa was on the water side, all bamboo and white towels and a woman who spoke in a whisper.
Camille and I lay on tables side by side with warm stones along our spines.
For twenty minutes neither of us said anything.
Then Camille said to the ceiling, "He's not cruel, you know."
"Who?"
"Tripp. I've worked for him six years. He's not cruel. He's ashamed."
"Of what?"
"Of how long he's put you off. I think he can't look at it." She turned her head on the table. "He thinks if he keeps busy, it won't be as bad."
"That's a very generous reading."
"It's the only one I have."
I thought about it with the heat sinking into my back.
