Chapter 8: The Sandbar

The next day Rhett took me out to a sandbar that appeared at low tide, a pale strip in the middle of the sea.

The captain of the white launch dropped us off with a cooler, a blanket and an umbrella, and promised to come back at three.

"You have two hours," he said, "and the tide doesn't care who you are."

We spread the blanket on the wet sand.

The water was warm and clear to the horizon, and there was not another soul in sight.

I had slept four hours the night before and I felt wonderful.

"Don't look at me like that," Rhett said.

"Like what?"

"Like you're thinking about last night."

"I am thinking about last night."

"We have a cooler and an umbrella, Rochelle. I'm a gentleman. Eat a sandwich."

I ate a sandwich.

Then I lay back on the blanket with my head on his thigh, and he picked sand out of my braid with two careful fingers.

"Tell me something that isn't on the list," he said. "Something that's not about home."

"That's against the rules."

"Rules can bend. It's my second day."

I looked up at the umbrella and the blue behind it.

"My grandmother raised me, mostly," I said. "She taught me to draw. She was a seamstress in a factory, and she used to trace patterns on butcher paper at the kitchen table, and I'd sit under it and copy her."

"And?"

"And when she died, I was twenty-four, and she left me three hundred thousand dollars. She had saved it a dollar at a time for forty years."

His fingers stopped in my hair.

"What did you do with it?"

"I gave it to my husband."

I felt him go still.

"He had a start-up that was about to die," I said. "A factory order he couldn't pay for. I'd drawn the pack, I believed in it, and I thought, this is what she would want. So I put it in. All of it."
