Chapter 6: Doctor Brodsky

"She isn't going anywhere tonight."

A tall man in scrubs had come up beside me at the nurses' station, reading my mother's chart over the top of his glasses.

"I'm Dr. Brodsky. I run the heart failure program," he said. "Are you the daughter?"

"Callie."

"Your mother's chart says she cried in the ambulance and then asked the paramedic for his mother's recipe for pound cake."

"That sounds like her."

"I like her," he said. "That's why I'm going to tell you the numbers instead of a story."

He turned the monitor toward me so I could see the screen.

"Her heart is working at about fifteen percent."

"I know."

"She needs a pump put in her chest. The evaluation and the device are about two hundred and ten thousand dollars without insurance. The hospital won't start the work until a deposit of fifteen thousand is in the billing office."

The nurse beside him winced.

I was holding my mother's folder against my chest, and I put it down on the counter very slowly.

"I'll have it by tomorrow morning."

"Do you have it?"

"I will."

Dr. Brodsky looked at me for a moment.

"I can keep her on the floor tonight on my own order," he said. "I can't do more than that. Don't make me regret it."
