Chapter 11: What Each of Us Kept
Niall hit me before I understood what I was looking at.
He rolled us both off the bed and onto the floor, and his body came down over mine.
The shotgun went off.
The window blew inward.
Glass rained across the sheets where we had been, and a hot piece of lead tore a hole in the plaster over the headboard.
"Stay down," Niall said into my hair.
"They shot at us."
"They shot over us. If he'd meant it, you'd have been in the bed."
From the yard, a voice rose in the rain.
"Next one's not for the glass, boy!"
It was one of the old men. He sounded drunk, and angry, and very sure of himself.
"She's out of the cage and in your bed," he called. "That's the rule broken, and that's the table's. Send her down."
I felt Niall's whole body go still.
"No," he said, loud enough for them to hear.
"Send her down, or we come up!"
I started to rise. He pushed me flat.
"Don't you dare."
"I'm not going to hide under your bed."
"You'll stay behind me."
"I'll stay where I want."
Footsteps hit the porch stairs below. Then the front door banged, and a cane struck the hall floor, slow, three beats.
A match scraped.
"Enough," Fergus said.
He stood at the foot of the stairs in the dark, and I could hear the cigarette take light.
"All of you in the yard. Put it down."
"But the rule says."
"I made the rule. I'll say when it's broken."
Nobody answered.
"My son took the fifteen into his own bed," Fergus said. "That's what carrying it means. He's a Caffrey, and she's a Caffrey's now, and the table doesn't eat what's already been eaten. Go and sleep."
