Chapter 8: Cian at the Gate
By the time I reached the yard, three old men stood on the porch with shotguns.
Fergus sat in his chair beside them, smoking, with his cane across his knees.
"Nobody fires," he said, without raising his voice. "Not yet."
Niall walked beside me down the gravel to the gate.
He kept one half step in front of me the whole way, and I let him.
On the other side of the wire, Cian sat on his bike with the engine off and both hands held open at his sides.
He had lost weight. His cut hung off his shoulders.
There were gray circles under his eyes, and a cut on his lip that had not healed.
"Mae," he said.
It was the first time I'd heard him say it since the oak.
I put my hand to the gate, and I couldn't speak.
"You're alive." His voice cracked. "You're really alive."
"You saw me," I said. "Last Friday. I was at the fence, and you saw me."
He shut his eyes.
"I saw you."
"You slowed down. Then you kept going."
"I had the whole pack on my tail, Mae. The road captain was right behind me. If I'd stopped, he would've called every man on that road."
"So?"
"So Wolf told us to leave you be."
"Leave me be?"
"He said it's handled." Cian looked up at me, and his eyes were wet. "He said wait. He's working something out, an arrangement, and if anyone interferes you could be hurt."
"An arrangement."
"That's the word he used."
"Did you ask him what it was?"
"I asked." He swallowed. "He said it wasn't mine to know."
