Chapter 13: Suspended
On Monday morning the HR director met me at the elevator and did not say good morning.
She walked me to a conference room on the fourth floor and shut the door.
A man from Lindqvist's legal department sat at the table with a laptop open and his hands folded on it.
Kelsey's folder lay in front of him, and the two letters from February and April were pulled out on top.
"Ms. Pembroke," the HR director said. "Please sit."
I sat.
"We opened a complaint on Saturday night," she said. "It came in through the ethics line. It names you."
"For what?"
The lawyer turned the first letter around to face me.
"The health plan approved both of Mr. Brasher's surgeries in full," he said. "The approval line carries the signature of the reviewing adjuster."
I looked at the line.
Approved by: M. Pembroke, Senior Claims Adjuster.
The M had a long loop on it, and the A leaned left.
It looked like my signature, and I had never seen the page before Saturday.
"I didn't sign this," I said.
"The complaint says you reviewed a claim for your own partner, which you are barred from doing," the lawyer said. "It also says you did it to collect the dependent disability supplement for him, which the plan pays only to a patient who cannot see."
"He got no supplement."
"Nine thousand six hundred dollars went into your joint account between April and now."
"I don't have a joint account. I have a checking account with eleven dollars in it."
