Chapter 24: The Last Statement
The envelope from the Lowell Savings branch was thin, and it was addressed in a clerk's handwriting.
I opened it on the flour table the next morning, with Floyd sitting beside me on a milk crate and a cup of coffee going cold.
It was the bank's year-end notice.
It said the account in my name could be closed or moved at my request, and it listed the balance.
$52,310.44.
I had looked at that number so many times that it no longer frightened me.
I read the line beneath it, which was new.
Last deposit: eleven weeks ago.
I held the page toward Floyd.
"You really stopped," I said.
"The day you told me it was yours." He looked at me. "I didn't want to put in another dollar and make you owe me."
I looked at him.
He was telling the truth, and I could see it on his face.
"Come with me," I said.
The branch on High Street opened at nine.
The same tired, polite manager took us into the same glass office.
I put the bakery's purchase papers on his desk.
"I want to close it," I said. "Thirty-eight thousand goes to the business account. Fourteen thousand goes into a new savings account in my name, and no one else's."
"And Mr. Brasher's name?"
"Not on it."
I glanced at Floyd.
He nodded, once, with no hesitation, and I loved him for how little it cost him to agree.
The manager typed for a minute.
Then he slid a paper across the desk, and I signed it.
The A leaned right, as it always had.
Then I put my pen down, and I felt something go out of me that I'd carried for three years, which was the fear that the bottom of the account was coming.
