Chapter 19: The Sparrow Has Spoken

Mace found Brandi at three that morning, sitting on the stairs outside her apartment with a duffel bag in her lap.

Gage's truck was gone, and the door was kicked in.

She had a new bruise along her cheekbone and would not say what had been said to her.

She came to church with us anyway.

The gate was open this time, and the lot was full.

Every bike in the Iron Hollow stood in rows under the red neon.

Inside, the long table was set with the gavel at the head.

My father's chair stood empty beside it.

Ray sat in his own chair with the man in the raincoat on one side and Gage on the other.

Gage did not look at me.

The old man called the room to order with the flat of his hand, and nobody argued.

"Motion," he said. "To remove Ray Dunning as president of the Iron Hollow Motorcycle Club."

"Second," said the Tuesday man.

"Discussion."

The woman in the vest stood and laid a gray ledger on the table.

"Nineteen years of dues," she said. "I went through them with a pencil."

"Fourteen thousand dollars a year goes into an account at a bank in the next county. It's in Ray's name, and it's not the club's."

Murmurs went around the table.

"That's the club's reserve," Ray said. "I keep it safe."

"Safe from whom?"

Ray said nothing.

"Brandi," I said.

She came forward and stood at the end of the table with her bag still on her shoulder.
