Chapter 6: The Sparrow Votes

Pearl took her pot roast and left us alone, and she shut the side door quietly behind her.

I carried the envelope up to the loft and sat on the bed under the window.

Mace stayed at the foot of the stairs, and I let him stay.

My mother's handwriting leaned to the right and always pressed too hard.

"Mallory," the letter began. "If you are reading this, you left him. Good."

I read it aloud, because I needed to hear it.

"Your father started the Iron Hollow. He built the first clubhouse with his own hands on land he paid for."

"The club has one rule older than any other. The founder's blood casts the last vote on anything that sells its land or changes its name."

"The sparrow is how that vote is cast. Whoever sets it on the table at church and says 'The sparrow votes' has spoken for him."

"Ray has been waiting nineteen years for the line to end. It hasn't. You are the line."

I stopped, and I read that last part again to myself.

"Never wear it near them," the letter went on. "Never show Ray's family you know what it is. I could not take you far enough away, so I took you quiet."

"Trust Mace. Mace was there when your father died, and he was only a boy. Ask him what he saw when you are strong enough to hear it."
