Chapter 23: Her Mother's Kitchen
We did not go to a hotel, or to the farm.
We went to my mother's church-hall kitchen, because it was Sunday and she had left the big urns soaking on Friday.
She let us in with her own key.
The hall was empty and the linoleum smelled of bleach and old coffee.
The light came through the high windows in long dusty bars.
My mother took one look at the two of us and turned on the tap over the sink.
"I will be in the sacristy with the priest," she said. "Arguing about the Lenten fund."
"Mamá."
"It will take a long time," my mother said, and went out.
Cosima had driven us.
She sat down in the car in the parking lot and did not come in.
I stood in the middle of the kitchen with my hand under my belly.
It was the first Sunday of July, and I was so big that my feet had gone to someone else.
Aurelio stood three steps from me with his hands at his sides.
There were no men.
There was no driver, and no table, and no uncle.
There was a steel sink and a broken dishwasher and a hook by the walk-in where his coat had hung in March.
"I told you I'd say it to your face," he said.
"You said it to thirty-one men."
"That was the table." He drew a breath. "This is you."
He knelt.
He went down on the linoleum on both knees, in his good dark suit, with his hands open on his thighs.
He looked up at me.
"I want my voice to be the one I use when I'm alone," he said. "Not the one from the table."
"Then use it."
"I called you a plaything because my uncle was in the room, and I was a coward."
