Chapter 9: The Pilothouse
My cousin works as a deckhand on a push tug moored at the Riverside barge terminal, and on Sunday mornings the boat is empty.
He had given me the key to the pilothouse in January, when I told him I liked the river.
I had never used it.
I took Aurelio there at five on Sunday, before the sun, in my mother's old Ford with the broken heater.
He didn't ask where.
He sat in the passenger seat with his hands on his knees and watched the black water of the Missouri slide past the dock lights.
I led him up the iron steps in the dark.
The pilothouse was a small glass room above the deck, with a worn wooden bench along the back wall and a big brass-ringed wheel.
Outside the windows the river ran wide and slow and gray.
The first light was coming up in a thin line over the far bank, pink and cold.
I shut the door behind us, and the room smelled of diesel and old coffee.
"This is where you take the boat," he said, looking around.
"This is where my cousin sleeps through his shift."
He turned, and I took off my coat.
I had thought about this for three days.
I had thought about what I wanted, and I had decided not to be shy about any of it.
I unbuttoned my blouse and let it fall.
His eyes went over me slowly, like a man looking at a field he has been away from for a long time.
"Sit," I said, and pointed at the bench.
He sat.
I stood in front of him in my bra and jeans with the dawn behind me, and I unhooked the bra and dropped it.
