Chapter 12: Not a Thing

The detective wrote for twenty minutes without interrupting me.

When I had finished, she capped her pen and looked at me for a long moment.

"The garage footage from that night was reported lost," she said. "Roland's company told us a server failed. The same week, the system at the garage was wiped."

"He told them I was alone."

"He told us a lot of things. He has a lawyer and a spotless record, and as far as the file goes, you're a woman with a head injury and gaps in her memory."

"I remember it now."

"I believe you. A defense lawyer will say a woman with a head injury remembered it the minute a detective showed her a photo."

I felt Erik, behind me, go very still.

"So what do I do?" I said.

"Nothing that tells him you remember."

"Why?"

"Because if he knows, he'll move whatever he's hiding." She stood and tucked the folder under her arm. "Imogen Sayre was in that car. Somebody kept a copy of the footage, or knows who did. Right now he thinks you're confused."

"I'm filing for divorce. He knows I'm not confused."

"He knows you're angry. That's a different thing."

She left her card on the counter and went out.

I stood at the table.

"No," Erik said.

"I haven't said anything."

"You were about to say you'd go back to that house."

"I wasn't."
