Chapter 19: Max's Company
"Read it aloud, Landon," said the chairman.
My husband did not move.
"Then I will," said the chairman.
The chairman took the folder back and put his finger on the page.
"The guardian may remove any officer of the company by written notice at any meeting of the board," he read. "No proxy is valid unless the guardian gives it in her own hand and in her own presence."
He turned a page.
"An officer who presents a proxy the guardian did not give shall be removed at once and shall lose his severance."
The room was so quiet I could hear the glass hum in the wind.
"This is absurd," Landon said, to nobody, in a voice that did not sound like his. "Joanna signed those. You just heard her say it looks like her signature."
"It looks like my signature," I said. "That's what makes it a good forgery."
I turned to the chairman.
"May I ask where it says it was signed?"
He found the line.
"At the offices of Reed Freight Group, thirty-first floor. Notarized by a notary of this county, on the morning of the school meeting, at a quarter past nine."
I looked at Camille.
She had sat so straight for so long that her shoulders had begun to shake.
"On the morning of the school meeting, at ten past nine, I was in the library of Max's school," I said. "I was sitting at a round table beside a teacher, a psychologist and a principal."
"Joanna," said Camille.
"Landon arrived at ten past nine, with roses. He brought you."
"It was a different Thursday."
"The psychologist took attendance," I said. "She wrote down who came, and she underlined it twice. The principal spoke exactly one sentence, and she will remember it."
