Chapter 21: Camille's File

I did not take the file.

"Why?" I asked.

Camille stood on the plaza steps in the cold with her cardboard box against her hip.

The wind pulled a strand of auburn hair across her mouth, and she did not push it back.

"Because I just watched him get down on his knees for you," she said. "Do you know what he did when the guards walked me to the elevator?"

"No."

"He told the chairman I'd acted alone." Her voice was dry and flat. "Landon Reed, who said I was his partner in everything, in front of three hundred people, three weeks ago."

"You forged my name, Camille."

"I did. Eight times. I'll answer for that." She lifted her chin. "But I'm not going to answer for his part of it, too."

She pushed the file at me again.

"I kept a copy of every deal he signed without reading it. Three years of them."

She shrugged.

"When I'm afraid of a man, I keep paper."

I took it then.

It was heavy, and the cover was cool and slightly damp from her hand.

"If this is a trap," I said.

"It's not a trap. I'm done."

"Do you want something?"

"Not from you." She looked past me at the long black car, and her mouth twisted. "I wanted him to love me, Joanna. It was the stupidest thing I ever wanted."

She turned and went down the steps with her box and her plant.

At the curb she hailed a taxi, and she did not look back.

I walked to the car Patricia had kept idling at the corner.

Caleb stood beside it.

Max was in the back seat with the door ajar and his headphones on, drawing on the inside of the atlas's cover.
