Chapter 18: Plan Cards
We held the planning meeting on the floor of Lydia's studio, because neither of us would sit on the other's chair.
Her plan was thirty-one index cards laid out in rows across the boards, each in blue ink, each with a number in the corner.
Mine was a whiteboard I had carried up two flights of stairs, with a single arrow and the word WIN.
"That is not a plan," Lydia said. "That's a verb."
"It's a verb with an arrow," I said.
"What does the arrow do?" Lydia asked.
"It goes where I go," I said.
Lydia knelt in front of her cards, and the hem of her dress made a pale-blue puddle around her knees.
"Gesture 30," Lydia said.
"At the cake, I take your hand, and we walk out the side of the tent in silence," she explained.
"It says everything without a word," Lydia added.
"It says we ran away," I said.
"It says we left," Lydia said.
"It says Duncan gets to finish his speech," I said.
"It says he gets to finish it to our backs," Lydia said.
I looked at the arrow, and I looked at the cards.
