Chapter 19: The Cake
The Harvest Gala tent held three hundred people, nine chandeliers and one cake the length of a canoe.
It sat on a rolling cart at the front of the stage, with a knife on a cushion beside it.
My name was in pink piping at the left end, and Lydia's was at the right.
Between us was a long stretch of white frosting and nothing at all.
We sat at Table One in burgundy and pale blue, with our chairs pushed so close that the arms touched.
Duncan's mother sat across from us in a gray silk jacket.
Nina sat at her elbow in orange, and the two of them shared a bread roll.
"I have no card," Lydia whispered.
"None?" I whispered back.
"I left them in the car," Lydia whispered. "I had a feeling."
"What do you have?" I asked.
"One sentence and a very bad stomach," Lydia said.
I put my hand under the tablecloth and found hers.
"Say it however it comes out," I said.
"What if it comes out wrong?" Lydia asked.
"Then it's yours," I said.
The lights dimmed, and a drumroll began from a four-piece band that Duncan had hired to sound like a larger band.
