Chapter 20: The Retraction
Duncan recovered quickly, which I will admit was impressive.
He walked to the front of the stage and held up the broken ring, like a man who had meant to do that.
"Friends," Duncan said. "That was a demonstration."
The tent was so quiet that I could hear the geese.
"Of what?" Nina asked from Table One.
"Of the delicate nature of choice," Duncan said.
"The cake's in the river," Nina said.
"That's part of it," Duncan said.
Somebody in the back row started to laugh, and somebody else shushed them, and then the shushing was louder than the laugh.
Duncan raised his hand.
"The women are playing a game, you see," Duncan said. "They always have. I played along because I am generous."
"Mother, you were there," Duncan said. "You saw how they behaved."
Duncan's mother put down her bread roll, wiped her fingers on a napkin, and stood up.
She walked to the foot of the stage with her cane, and the whole tent leaned to follow her.
"Duncan," his mother said. "I have one question, and you may answer yes or no."
