Chapter 27: Delete
I didn't post anything that afternoon.
I sat in the diner with my pie going cold and scrolled down through three years of my son.
Benji at one week, in a hospital blanket. Benji at one, asleep in a laundry basket.
Benji at two, crying because his balloon flew away. Four hundred thousand likes.
I'd never asked myself why it was sweet to watch a baby cry.
"Fee," Ollie said. "You don't have to do it today."
"Yes, I do."
Jameson's mother took the six o'clock flight home to Charleston.
She said she wanted her own bed and her own church, and that she'd done enough crying in public for one day.
At the airport curb she held Jameson's face in both hands for a second.
Then she turned to me.
"Whatever you decide to do with it," she said, "do it all the way."
At nine that night, Benji was asleep in Ollie's guest room with Plates and the shark hat.
The rest of us went out to the garage.
Ollie turned on the lamps in the little studio and set his phone on a stand, pointed at me.
