Chapter 29: The Steps
"Why there?" I said.
"Because that's where I did it."
He took his hand off the gate.
"Bring your phone if you want to," he said. "I did it in front of people. I'd like to do this in front of people too."
"Do what?"
"Saturday," he said, and went inside to pour his mother a very small glass of something.
I didn't sleep much for three nights.
On Friday Ollie found me at the carriage house table at two in the morning, writing nothing on a legal pad.
"You know what it is," he said.
"I don't."
"You know what it's not, then."
"It's not a ring," I said. "He wouldn't. Not there."
"No," Ollie agreed. "He's not an idiot. He's just slow."
On Saturday morning I drove Benji to his grandmother's house on South Battery.
It was the first time I'd ever left him alone with her.
She met us at the door in an apron. I'd never seen her in an apron.
"We're making pound cake," she said. "I'm told it needs to be less dense."
"Who told you that?"
"Your son," she said. "Over the phone. He was very firm."
