Chapter 21: Piper's Own
Piper came in out of the rain and walked straight to our table.
Her father started to stand, and she put a hand up.
"Please don't."
He sat.
She did not take the empty chair.
She stood at the end of the table with her phone in her fist and her chin up.
She looked nothing like the girl who had dropped a cup in Kensington.
"I read your email on Owen's phone," she said. "I'm not sorry. He left it on the counter."
"I was going to ask him to tell you," her father said.
"I know. That's why I came." She drew a breath. "I have three rules for talking to me. If you want to, you can follow them. If you don't, that's your choice."
"Go on."
"One. You call my phone, and I'm allowed not to pick up. No one comes to the door when I don't."
"Agreed."
"Two. Nobody writes as me. Not Mom, not you, not a doctor, not a lawyer. If it's in my name, I typed it."
"Agreed."
"Three." Her voice shook and she steadied it. "Nothing in my clothes, my phone or my bag that tells you where I am. You ask me. I'll tell you if I want to."
Her father looked at her for a long time.
"I've been a coward for a decade, Pip."
"I know."
"Is there anything I can do?"
"Yes." She pointed at the envelope on the table. "Be quiet and have your coffee. Then go to your hotel, and call me tomorrow, and I might answer."
He laughed, and it came out wet.
"All right."
Piper turned to Owen.
He had stood without my noticing.
He took a worn white envelope from his jacket pocket and held it out to her without a word.
