Chapter 9: Before Noon

Wednesday morning at a quarter to nine, Owen knocked on my door with two coffees and a paper bag.

"Before noon," he said. "So we can't discuss it. We can only eat."

I let him in.

"How did you know there was an it?"

"Your ceiling is my floor. I heard a man's voice through it at eleven last night, and then an hour of you not moving."

I put my face in my hands.

"I was sitting very still," I said into them. "I was making a list of everything I paid for."

He laughed, and I laughed, and for a few minutes it was only that: the smell of the coffee, the sun slanting across the kitchen counter, and a paper bag with two warm egg sandwiches in it.

He sat across from me and ate his sandwich in four bites.

"Tell me about London so far," he said. "Not the ex. The city."

"I got a library card."

"Big day."

"I found a place that does a pie with a fried egg on it. I bought two. I cried a little on the way home, but that was the egg."

He smiled with his whole face this time.

It changed it.

I looked away before I said something stupid.

My phone buzzed on the counter between us.

The screen said DYLAN, and the time was 9:02.

Owen glanced at the screen and then at me.

"It's not noon," he said.

"It's not noon."

"Do you want to answer?"

I thought of Dylan's voice, the soft hurt one.
