Chapter 8: The Feed Store

My father waited until morning to do it, and he did it in front of the whole crew.

The hands were lined up at the feed barn for the daily work list.

Ray stood on the step with his bad knee locked and his hat pulled low.

"Boone Overstreet," he said. "Come here."

Boone came.

He had a bruise coming up over one eye from the day before, and he did not look at me.

"You've been with this ranch eleven years," my father said, loud enough for every man to hear. "You'll pack your things and be off my land by Friday."

"Dad," I said.

"Stay out of it, Annie."

"You can't fire him."

"I can do as I like on my own ranch."

"For what?"

My father did not answer that.

He looked at the hands, at the gravel, at anywhere but me.

"For what I walked in on last night," he said finally. "I won't have it under my roof."

"It's not under your roof. It's a barn."

"It's my barn."

"He stopped traffic yesterday!" I said. "He turned two thousand cattle off the highway, and he got a deputy at his door for it! The Kells cut that fence, and he took the blame!"

"That isn't the point."

"Then what is?"

My father put his hand on the rail.

His knuckles were white.

"Yes, sir," Boone said.

He said it quietly, and he turned and walked away across the yard.

He did not argue, and he did not look back.

I stood there and stared at my father.

Then I went after Boone.

I caught up with him at the foreman's cabin behind the machine shed.

It was a small place with a tin roof and one window.

He had the door open and a duffel bag on the bed.
