Chapter 18: Ninety-Nine Point Nine

The result came Monday at noon, in a cream envelope with the court's seal on it.

The lawyer brought it to the clubhouse himself.

He walked into the main room with it held in both hands, and every brother in the building stood up.

The room smelled of coffee and old leather.

All twenty-two patches were there, and the old ladies stood along the wall, and Dot had Eli on her hip by the kitchen door.

I stood beside Gage.

I had my hand in his, and I didn't care who saw.

Brock came in last.

He'd been bailed out Sunday afternoon, and he walked through the front door in a clean shirt with his lawyer half a step behind him.

He still had the PROSPECT patch on.

He stopped three feet inside the door and looked around the room.

Nobody moved aside for him.

"I'm entitled to be here," he said. "I'm a member of this club."

"You're a prospect," the old brother said from the head of the table. "Sit where you like."

Brock didn't sit.

"Read it," he said to the lawyer. "Read it, so everyone hears that I raised him."

"It isn't addressed to you," the lawyer said. "It's addressed to the court, and the court's copy goes to the parties. All three of you."

He slit the envelope with a thumbnail.

He took out two pages, put on his glasses and cleared his throat.

"On the matter of the minor child, Eli Dunning," he read. "The tested man, Brock Kimmel, is excluded as the biological father. Probability of paternity, zero."

A sound went around the room.

It was quiet, but I felt it in my teeth.

"The tested man, Gage Rutledge, is not excluded. Probability of paternity, ninety-nine point nine nine nine eight percent."

Gage's hand tightened on mine.

He didn't look at the paper.

He looked at Eli, over by the kitchen door, who was trying to put a cracker into Dot's glasses case.
