Chapter 12: The Fitting

Brooke was waiting in the church parking lot at six the next morning.

She sat on the hood of her little green car with her braid down.

I stopped ten feet away.

"You have three minutes," I said.

"I'm a notary," she said. "At the bank. You know that."

"I know."

"Last April, Constance came in with a paper. It was the renewal of your father's loan, with new terms. The note comes due the day the engagement ends."

"I've read about the terms."

"The page had your father's signature on it," Brooke said. "She asked me to stamp it. She said he'd signed at her office and she was in a hurry."

She held out her phone.

On the screen was a photograph of a page, with a blue notary stamp at the bottom and a date.

April the ninth.

I felt the ground tilt.

"On April ninth my father was in the hospital in Columbus," I said. "They put in a stent. I drove him. I slept in a chair beside his bed for two nights."

"I know," Brooke whispered. "I brought you coffee."

"You stamped it knowing that."

"I didn't connect it until Saturday." She was crying again, quietly. "I swear. She said he signed. I didn't look at the date, Margot, I never looked at the dates, I just stamped..."

"You stamped a forged signature."

"I know."

"That's a crime, Brooke. That's yours too."

"I know. I don't care."

I looked at her for a long time.

She looked ten years younger without the cardigan and the sweetness, like the girl I had met in the school cafeteria.
