Chapter 17: The Rehearsal Dinner

Margot's POV

The rehearsal dinner was in the ballroom of the Marietta Country Club, at a long table under chandeliers, with eighty people eating filet.

I sat at the head beside Preston.

His left cheek was a dull red where I had hit him, and he had covered it with makeup.

Constance sat across from us in lavender, serene.

Brooke sat three seats down in a navy dress with her hands folded.

Dominic sat at the far end by the door, in his dark suit, and every time I looked up he was already looking at me.

My father sat beside him.

I had asked them to sit together, and neither had asked why.

In my purse was a small silver flash drive and a printout of a page with a blue stamp.

At eight, Preston stood and tapped his glass.

"Everyone," he said, "I won't keep you."

The room settled.

"I'd like to thank my mother, who raised me." He raised his glass to her. "And my brother, who has finally come home. And my beautiful bride."

He turned and smiled down at me.

"Margot, you're the easiest decision I ever made."

People laughed warmly.

Constance inclined her head.

I stood.

"Can I say a few words?"

"Of course," Preston said, and sat, still smiling.

I walked to the front of the room.

The club's sound technician stood by the wall with the soundboard, as I had asked him that afternoon.
