Chapter 4: Thirty Days

Ruggero closed his folder and smiled at all of us.

"Sunday, then," he said. "The Families dine together on Sunday. We will settle the registry at the table."

He took his witnesses and his cane and left.

I walked out after him and did not look at Alessio.

The Albani house still stood at the end of the old street in the North District, with the same green door and the same cracked step.

Alessio's car followed mine the whole way.

A Bellandi man was already waiting at the gate when I went in.

I left the door open behind me, because I knew he would come.

The kitchen was cold, and everything in it was where my mother had left it.

I put my suitcase on the table and turned the stove on for no reason except to hear something hiss.

Alessio stopped in the doorway.

"You called me your wife in front of the Families," I said. "You wear another woman's ring. Explain."

"Not yet."

"Alessio."

"I will give you three things tonight, and every one of them is true." His voice was quiet and steady. "After that you can throw me out."

I crossed my arms.

"First. I have not slept with Livia, not once, not as a husband and not any other way."

I laughed.

"You wrote her child into your registry."

"I did. I'm not asking you to believe the rest. I am telling you what is true."

"And the second?"

"The wing your mother lies in has my name on its deed. Ruggero cannot take a bed out from under her." He paused. "But Livia's liver is hers to give, and he can ask her to wait. He knows that, and so do I."
