Chapter 19: The Challenge
The Blood Moon came down out of the north hills at moonrise, forty wolves in long coats.
They stood in a dark line on the far side of the torches.
The envoy walked in front of them.
Behind him came their Alpha, bare-chested in the cold, with his coat over his shoulders.
The packs of the North drew back from them without meaning to.
I stood at the edge of the ring between the new Alpha of Redfern and the river Alpha.
My knife was in my boot.
The moonflower was in a glass vial in my coat pocket, right where the last one had been on Cutbank Ridge.
Robin and the twins were at Cold River with the cook and twenty of Thane's wolves.
I'd kissed all three of them before I left.
Thane came through the crowd last.
Every wolf on that field went down on one knee as he passed, the way they had at the Fair.
He walked straight to me.
"Say it," he said.
"After."
The corner of his mouth went up.
He put his hand on the back of my neck, in front of the whole North, and kissed me hard.
Then he walked into the ring and pulled his sweater off over his head.
Across the torches, the Blood Moon Alpha let his coat drop to the grass.
