Chapter 10: The Dead Man Walks Out

Cade's hand dropped from my apron.

The man in the black jacket stopped in the middle of the shop with the bike still running behind him.

He had washed his hands, and his face was clean and calm, and I realized I had never seen him stand up straight.

"Hello, Cade," he said.

All the color left my husband's face.

It went out of him slowly, from his forehead down, and left him grey under his tan.

"No," Cade said.

"It's been a while."

"You're dead." His voice cracked on it. "You died. You died on the road the same night as the old man on the shoulder."

"Is that what you tell them?"

"Rhett," Cade said.

The name hit the room, and it hit me.

I stood behind the counter with the wrench still hanging from my hand.

"Rhett," I said. "Your brother Rhett?"

Nobody answered me.

"He died. You told me that on our second date. You said he went off the road that spring, and you couldn't talk about it. You made me promise never to ask about the helmet."

"Ruby," Dutch said gently.

"Don't." I pointed the wrench at him. "Is it true?"

He turned his grey eyes to me.

I saw Floyd in his face, and Cade, in the same jaw and the same brow.

I had been looking at it for a week.

"My name is Rhett Dutch Chitwood," he said. "I'm thirty-eight. I've been out of McAlester four months."

"McAlester," I said.

"The state prison. I did eight years of a ten-year sentence."

"For what?"

"Vehicular manslaughter. An older club member. He was riding behind us the night it happened."
