Chapter 19: The Card
Rhett's POV
The camera had a small screen, and all four of us leaned over my father's kitchen table to see it.
Ruby stood at my shoulder with her hand on my back.
The widow set the camera down on its side, between the sugar bowl and the milk, and pressed a button.
"He would have wanted somebody to see it," she said. "He never let anyone stand behind him on a ride, so he never showed it to anybody."
The picture came up grey and then clear.
A county road at night, from low down on a handlebar.
Two taillights ahead of the camera, my pickup's, red and steady.
The old man's glove showed at the edge of the frame, and the engine hummed under the sound.
I had not heard that engine in eight years, and my chest closed up.
"That's your truck," my father said.
"I know it is."
The pickup drifted.
It crossed the yellow line on a curve and swung back too hard, and the taillights jerked.
The camera caught a quick patch of the cab through the back window.
It was too far to see a face, but the driver's head was dark against the dome light.
"There," the widow said softly.
The pickup crossed the line again.
The camera swerved.
There was a bang, and the image rolled over and over, and then it held still, tilted, with asphalt in one corner and the red glow of my taillights in the other.
The engine was still running somewhere.
Nobody in my father's kitchen was breathing.
Ruby's fingers had closed in my shirt.
On the screen, the pickup had stopped fifty yards down the road with its brake lights burning.
