Chapter 21: Not Yet

Jasper's POV

The bank allowed one escort into the vault with a box holder, and the box holder was a woman named Marguerite Ames.

So I went in first, alone, with her access card and a clerk's key.

Imogen waited upstairs with Nathan's lawyer.

I had told her it was a safety check.

It was a lie, and it was the smaller one.

The vault was cold and lit white.

Box three-twelve was a long steel drawer at waist height.

I slid it out onto the table and lifted the lid.

Inside lay a stack of ledger pages bound in a black clip, a small digital recorder, and a thin file of photographs.

I turned the first ledger page.

It was a shipment list, stone by stone, with weights and a column of dates.

I knew that page from three years of reading it.

I had a copy of it in my bag at the coast house.

I had put it there that morning, with a plan to put it in her hands before the vault.

I had put it there, and then I had not done it.

I kept turning pages.

Halfway through, a sheet in a different color of paper was folded into the stack, a payroll list, typed.

Halcyon Mine, Shift Two.

Seventy-one names.

I read down to the fourth from the bottom, and my eyes stopped.

My sister's name was there in black ink.

Beside it, someone had written a payout figure and the word Closed.
