Chapter 24: The Leak

By nine the next morning the ledger was on every screen in the country.

I never learned who leaked it first.

Someone at the task force, a clerk, a tired agent with a conscience.

It did not matter.

The headline ran in red across the top of the morning news.

HALCYON FILES: BLOOD DIAMONDS, TWO FAMILIES, ONE SHELL.

Below it were two photographs side by side.

Preston in a black tuxedo.

My father in front of the Radcliffe tower.

I watched from the kitchen table with a cup of tea going cold in my hands.

Jasper stood behind my chair.

Nathan sat across from me, perfectly still.

"Radcliffe Holdings stock opened down thirty percent," he said. "It's still falling."

"Dad?"

"He's locked in his study. The family lawyers have gone through four phones."

The doorbell rang twice, and then the house phone, and then both our cell phones at the same time.

Nathan put his on silent.

I let mine ring.

"Mrs. Radcliffe," a voice said on the speaker when Jasper finally answered. "We're from the federal task force. We have a warrant for the Ames Jewels offices. We would like a statement from you today."

"You'll have it," I said.

On the television a long line of dark vans pulled up in front of the Ames building.

Agents in jackets carried out banker's boxes, one after another, and a row of employees stood on the sidewalk with their badges in their hands.

I saw the security guard who had held the elevator for me.
