Chapter 17: The Cabin Stove

Trudy had taken the pickup and gone to a friend's house in Erie.

"Don't wait up," she'd said, and she had winked at me through the windshield, and she had not been subtle about it.

So the cabin was dark when we pulled in, and cold, and it smelled of woodsmoke and old cedar.

Cameron knelt at the stove and fed it kindling until it caught.

I stood in the middle of the floor in the green dress with snow melting in my hair and watched his back.

He had taken off his suit jacket.

His shirt was pulled tight across his shoulders when he reached for the next log.

"Cameron."

He turned his head.

"I told you to stay," I said. "I didn't say it for the ride."

He put the log down.

He stood up slowly, and he crossed the room, and he stopped so close that I could feel the heat of him through my dress.

"Say what you did mean."

"I want you to take me to bed."

His breath went out of him.

"I want you to touch me," I said. "I've wanted it since you rubbed my leg and said it out loud. I've lain awake in that back room listening to you breathe on the couch."

He put his hand on my face.

His thumb dragged across my lower lip, and I opened my mouth and caught it, and I bit down on the tip.

"Fuck," he said.

Then he kissed me.

It was not careful.

He kissed me with his mouth hard and hungry, his hand pushing into my hair and tipping my head back.

I tasted champagne and snow and him.

I got both hands on his shirt and dragged it out of his waistband and found his skin, hot and tight over his ribs.

He walked me backward until my knees hit the rug in front of the stove.

The zipper of the green dress went down my spine in one pull.

It fell off my shoulders, and the cold air hit my breasts, which were heavier and more sensitive than they had ever been.
