Chapter 20: The Chair
Cameron read the second page, and the third.
The strings of lights buzzed over the tables, and a hundred and fifty people pretended not to listen.
"Chief executive," he said. "Full control of the voting trust. The accounts unfrozen as of tonight. Odette to step down at the end of the month."
"And the condition?" I said.
"There's no condition."
"There's always a condition."
"Mr. Draycott would have a free hand," said the man with the silver beard. "The board has voted. Unanimously, sir, except for one abstention."
"Whose?"
"Your grandmother's."
Cameron looked down the street.
Odette sat at the fisherman's table with her gloves off, holding a mug in both hands, and she was not looking at us.
She was looking at the cider.
"Melanie," said Cameron.
"Yes?"
"You tell me."
"No."
He blinked.
"I'm not going to tell you," I said. "It's your company and your name. If you take it, I won't hold it against you. I'll still be here and I'll still be fine. If you don't, I won't hold that against you either."
"You'd let me choose."
"I'd insist on it."
He was quiet.
I watched him think.
I watched his eyes go over the folder, the old man with the coffee cup, the baker's wife passing a plate of fried smelt, a little boy balanced on his father's shoulders in a Santa hat.
"I took a job," he said.
"You what?"
"On Monday I start at the dock, loading the fish trucks. Your friend the baker knows a man." His mouth moved. "Six dollars over minimum. A hat is included."
"You didn't tell me."
