Chapter 6: Black Ice

At six I went out onto the porch with a blanket around my shoulders.

The snow had stopped.

Cameron was awake.

He had rolled down his window and was sitting with both hands wrapped around the steering wheel, and his breath showed in the cold.

I walked to the edge of the porch and stayed there.

"How did you find this place?" I said.

"Trudy's license plate. I paid a man to run it." He tried to smile and his lips cracked. "It was the last thing my credit card did before it stopped working."

"Stopped working."

"Odette froze everything at midnight. The cards, the apartment, the car allowance. I have forty-two hundred dollars in my wallet and this car."

"What did you do?"

"I told the board I wouldn't marry Celia." He said it to the steering wheel. "I stood up in the middle of dinner with her father and all the directors there, and I told my grandmother no."

I held the blanket tighter.

"She isn't going to forgive that."

"I don't want her to."

Trudy opened the front door behind me with a steaming mug in each hand.

She walked past me down the steps, handed the first mug through his window, and went back inside without a word.

He wrapped both hands around it and drank half of it at once.
