Chapter 11: Tobias's POV

Tobias's POV

I went down to the creek alone, with Dara still asleep in my shirt.

I pulled on jeans and my boots and did not wake her.

The old Alpha was waiting on the other bank with his hands folded on the head of a cane.

He was sixty-eight and had not changed since I was a boy at the joint summers.

Back then he used to hand out the sparklers.

"Heir Hargrove," he said. He smiled. "I'm told Cold Creek has been very kind to a Standifer."

"She's a guest."

"Of course. I thank your father for the sixteen years of shelter given to her grandmother." He tilted his head. "Is she well?"

"She's well."

"Good. I was sorry to hear about the child."

I did not answer that.

"I have come to carry a message and then I will go," the old Alpha said. "My son's Luna rite stands at the Harvest Moon. The Council meets at the stone that morning to hear the oathbreaking charge. Tell her."

"She won't be at the rite."

"Tell her anyway." His eyes were pale and friendly. "And tell her the Standifer stone will be open this evening at moonrise, if she'd like to see her father's name in the ledger before she decides what to do with her own."

He got back into the sedan.

I watched it go up the ridge road until I could not see it.

I did not tell Dara.

I told myself it was because she had slept so little and had so much to carry.

That was part of it.

The other part was my wolf, which had been pressing hard against my skull since the old man smiled.

He had said the word ledger twice, and Dirk had said it once across the creek before he stopped.
