Chapter 17: Tobias's POV

Tobias's POV

The border road runs between two fields of cut hay.

The only way across it to the garage is a plank bridge over the ditch.

I got there ahead of them and stood in the middle of the planks in my jeans and nothing else.

Ten wolves came out of the dark on the Ashfall side. Behind them walked the old Alpha, with his cane, and beside him the Beta.

The Beta was a heavy man with a gray beard.

He was Celia's father, and he had signed his name to a murder sixteen years ago.

"Heir Hargrove," the old Alpha said. "You're in the way."

"This is Cold Creek land from the ditch on."

"Your father knows I'm here."

"My father knows you're on the road. He doesn't know you're coming across."

I put my hands in my pockets.

"If you step on this plank, he'll know by the time you reach the garage."

"Will he?" The old Alpha smiled. "He kept his wolves home this noon, boy. I had it from my own man at your gate."

I said nothing.

"So it's only you." He tilted his head.

"A man who'd give up his heirship for a girl. I can't think of a single wolf who'd miss you."

"Stand aside, Hargrove," the Beta said. "We want the card and my daughter, nothing else."

"You can't have either."

"The Standifer girl broke her arm, and we'll forgive that." His voice shook. "Mine is a child. She did something stupid, and she'll be punished at home."
