Chapter 18: What It Costs
"Tell me what to do," Hugh said.
It was Monday, ten to twelve, and we were standing in the coat room of a private club on Nob Hill.
Through the double doors I could hear the Stratton Foundation's annual luncheon settling into its chairs.
The symphony. The children's hospital. Two museums and a ballet company.
And four reporters at a table by the windows, because the board had invited them.
Hugh had the statement folded in his breast pocket.
The board's secretary had handed it to him at the door.
I'd read it over his shoulder.
"I regret statements made during a period of great personal strain, caused by a hostile and very public divorce."
"I mean it," he said. "Tell me. Whatever you say, I'll do it."
I looked up at him.
"No," I said.
"Laurel."
"You decided for me once," I said. "With your camera off. You don't get to make me decide for you now, just so you can say I told you to."
He stared at me.
Then something in his face eased.
"That's fair," he said.
I went through the double doors on my own and took a seat in the second row, where he'd be able to see me from the podium.
