Chapter 10: The Council Dinner
The Council dinner was held at the palace two days later, and Corwin told me I did not have to attend.
I went anyway.
Bridie's warning had followed me for two days: Ask Mother what she did the night you turned twenty-one.
Mother would be at that table, and I meant to watch her face.
I wore a dark green dress the palace seamstress had cut to my measurements overnight.
He met me at the foot of the stairs and held out his arm, and I did not take it.
"There'll be cameras on the steps," I said. "No touching me in front of them."
"Agreed."
"And no kissing."
The corner of his mouth moved.
"I wasn't planning to, Miss Ashworth."
"Good."
We walked up the stairs a full pace apart.
Reporters lined the carpet behind a rope, and the flashes never stopped.
Then a voice cut through them.
"Linnet!"
Garrick had pushed past a Guard at the rope.
He was in a plain dark coat with no insignia, his hair a mess, a night's growth on his jaw.
Every lens turned to him.
"Linnet, please. Five minutes."
"You've been told to stay at the barracks," Corwin said.
"I'll take whatever the Guard gives me after. Let me say this one thing."
I stopped on the step and looked down at him.
"Say it, then."
He took a breath and spoke to me and to every camera.
"I made a mistake. I chose the wrong person, and I've known it for days. You stood in front of the whole city and told the truth, and I was too much of a coward to do it first."
