Chapter 14: Discharged Without Honor
The Alpha's boots had hardly cleared the corridor when Corwin spoke.
"Your father has known that man for years."
"He never mentioned him," I said.
"Godfrey doesn't mention things." He took my elbow, then let go, remembering the corridor had windows. "There's a hearing at noon. The Guard sits on Dunleavy in open session."
"You don't have to be there," he said.
"I know," I said. "I'm going."
The barracks hall held four hundred Guards in black, standing in ranks along both walls.
A press gallery had been put up behind a rope, and the Captain-General sat at the high table with Corwin on his right.

Garrick stood alone on the floor in his plain coat.

"The accused may speak," he said.
Garrick turned to face the ranks.
"I was gravely wounded," he said. "For the first year I did not know my own name. By the time I did, I was bound to the people who had saved me, and ashamed."
He let that settle on the room.
It was a good speech. I had heard him make it, in other words, at three dinners.
"The Guard calls Linnet Ashworth," said the Captain-General.
I stood.
"Miss Ashworth. You were engaged to the accused. Do you have anything to say about his state of mind?"
